Five-Year Collaboration Launched to Deliver Safe Water in Gakenke
Excited to receive in The team from University of #Wisconsin–#Madison Chapter of Engineers without borders (EWB/USA). In partnership with Resilient Builders Initiative (RBI), the team is conducting a field visit in Rwanda as part of the ongoing Karambi Water Project in #Gakenke District. This collaboration, which officially started in 2025, aims to improve sustainable access to clean and safe water for local communities through a community-centered and technically informed approach. The current visit follows the successful completion of preliminary activities, including water quality testing and topography surveys, which laid the foundation for the project feasibility study and future implementation phases.

The team spent 10 days carrying out technical assessments, stakeholder consultations and field observation to evaluate the feasibility and long-term sustainability of the proposed water system. The Karambi Water Project aligns with the 2026 global theme, “Water and Gender / Where water flows, equality grows,” recognizing the important connection between equitable water access, gender empowerment, public health, and community resilience. Through this partnership, the project seeks not only to address water challenges but also to promote inclusive development and improve the quality of life for vulnerable populations in the targeted communities.

The first day the team visited RBI office to conclude the partnership initiated before and draw journal of 5 years ahead supporting Rwandan community in access to clean. The team was received by RBI Regal Representative, Ms Justine RUTABAGAYA and staff of RBI and shared lunch together. She said that we are happy to receive them in Rwanda, and ready to work with them, not only in Gakenke but also to open the doors where necessary to increase water access in Rwanda.

When the team met Gakenke District, was received by Mayor of the district, Madame Vestine MUKANDAYISENGA, WASAC branch of Gakenke and other district staff. It was welcomed in Gakenke and agreed on partnership agreement. The district promised any support so that the five years agreement will end with significant impact starting from Karambi and Muyira villages.

From the day 3 to 8 was characterized by field assessment, different tests, community mapping, meeting communities and signing with RBI and the District the partnership agreement of five years.

It was concluded every one excited for what achieved and promising people of Karambi and Muyira getting Safe water at closer distance soon after study approval.
