From Homelessness to Hope: Shelter Inauguration in Kamonyi, Nyarubaka
RBI, in partnership with Kamonyi District through CNF Kamonyi, proudly inaugurated a new three-room house with a kitchen and toilet for a family in Nyarubaka Sector, Kamonyi. After more than a decade without shelter, this milestone marks not just a homecoming, but a step toward resilience and climate justice.
The family, led by a mother of three including a child living with a disability, had lost their previous home to disaster. Today, they stand as a symbol of strength and renewal in a community already challenged by drought and limited development.
This initiative went beyond providing shelter. It embodied climate justice and human security, aligning with RBI’s mission to protect families most at risk. Around the home, fruit trees were planted to restore the land, improve food security, and bring fresh air to the area. These trees represent a living bond between RBI and the family, with ongoing care until they bear fruit.
The project was fully funded by RBI members—friends from diverse professional backgrounds united by skills, compassion, and solidarity. A part from constructed shelter, essential equipments and foods were distributed like.
During the inauguration, Madame UWIRINGIRA Marie Josee, Vice Mayor for Social Affairs in Kamonyi, expressed appreciation for RBI’s support and emphasized the importance of tree planting in restoring the environment and protecting families. Justine RUTABAGAYA, RBI’s Legal Representative, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment: “We take Kamonyi as our parent. We promise continuous support for vulnerable families here. This house was built with heart.” The beneficiary, MANIRAGABA Therese, overwhelmed with joy after more than ten years of homelessness, pledged to protect both the home and the trees for years to come.
The event concluded with community tree planting and a celebration with neighbors, reinforcing the spirit of solidarity. Gratitude goes to Kamonyi District leadership, CNF Kamonyi, Nyarubaka Sector Executive, the RBI team, and the welcoming neighbors who stood together to restore hope.
